Ya llegó con éxito al planeta Marte la más ambiciosa misión espacial de la NASA llamada MARS 2020, con el rover Perseverance a bordo, que segundos después de tener sus seis ruedas perfectamente apoyadas en la superficie marciana, envió la primera fotografía y los datos de telemetría a los ingenieros en la Tierra, que saltaron de alegría de sus asientos del Centro de Control de la Misión en el Laboratorio de Propulsión a Chorro (JPL, por sus siglas en inglés), en Pasadena, Los Ángeles, Estados Unidos

Después de casi 470 millones de kilómetros recorridos en siete meses, el rover Perseverance , similar en tamaño a su antecesor y gemelo en tamaño Curiosity que arribó a Marte en 2012, completó su viaje al planeta rojo con el objetivo de buscar rastros de vida pasada en el cráter Jezero, donde hace unos 3500 millones de año hubo abundante agua.

El rover tocó suelo marciano a las 15.56 horas del este de Estados Unidos (20.56 horas GMT), según la agencia espacial estadounidense, y se convirtió en el quinto de estos vehículos que explora el planeta vecino.

Concretamente, el rover rastreará signos de vida microbiana antigua en Marte, recolectará y almacenará rocas y regolitos marcianos (roca y polvo) para que futuras misiones los traigan a la Tierra, caracterizará la geología y el clima del planeta y allanará el camino para la exploración humana en un futuro cercano.

El cráter Jezero, el sitio seleccionado por su potencial científico, es fácilmente el sitio más peligroso que la NASA jamás haya intentado aterrizar un rover. Pero la recompensa de obtener respuestas sobre los orígenes de la vida misma, valió el riesgo de la misión de más de 2700 millones de dólares de costo.

“Es uno de los deltas mejor conservados de la superficie de Marte”, según la científica de la NASA Katie Stack Morgan. En la Tierra, se han encontrado fosilizados microbios de miles de millones de años en rocas de deltas similares.

En busca de rastros de vida concretos

El planeta rojo una vez tuvo los ingredientes de la vida: agua, compuestos orgánicos y un clima favorable. En las muestras que recolectará Perseverance, los científicos esperan encontrar fósiles de bacterias o de otros microbios y confirmar que la vida existió en Marte. También está destinado a ser el primer paso en una ambiciosa misión de dos partes que, algún día, devolverá muestras marcianas a la Tierra.

La misión tiene dos objetivos principales: buscar rastros de vida pasada y recolectar muestras que serán selladas herméticamente en tubos dentro del vehículo explorador. Pero Perseverance probablemente no podrá decir si una roca contiene microbios antiguos. Para tener certeza, será necesario que las muestras sean finamente diseccionadas en la Tierra para eventualmente distinguir rastros microscópicos de organismos antiguos.

El rover desenterrará partes de la superficie del planeta y recolectará muestras que, con suerte, serán recogidas por otra nave espacial que sea capaz de transportar dichos materiales de regreso a nuestro mundo.

La NASA todavía está a muchos años de crear y lanzar los vehículos necesarios para llevar esas muestras de regreso a nuestro planeta, pero al menos el rover Perseverance habrá desenterrado polvo y rocas para que la futura nave espacial pueda recuperarlas recién en 2031.

El robot más sofisticado en Marte

Solo los estadounidenses han logrado posar sobre Marte robots en forma exitosa; concretamente cuatro aterrizadores (fijos) y cuatro vehículos exploradores: Pathfinder, Spirit, Opportunity y Curiosity en 2012, el único que sigue activo. En los últimos 20 años se confirmó que el planeta tuvo océanos, ríos y lagos.

Pero fue Curiosity el que constató la presencia de moléculas orgánicas complejas. Los científicos piensan que la vida, en caso de haber existido en Marte, no tuvo tiempo para evolucionar a formas complejas antes de que el planeta se secara por completo.

Los primeros módulos de aterrizaje estadounidenses, el Viking 1 y 2, intentaron hallar señales de vida en 1976, pero no tuvieron éxito. “Los experimentos de detección de vida fueron un fracaso total”, dijo días atrás Scott Hubbard, quien lanzó el programa actual de exploración marciana en la década de 2000.

La NASA decidió entonces proceder por etapas: gracias al estudio de los suelos, el análisis químico y molecular de las rocas y las múltiples observaciones satelitales, los geólogos y los astrobiólogos gradualmente han comprendido dónde fluyó el agua y qué zonas podrían haber sido propicias para la vida. “Entender dónde pudo haber sido habitable Marte en el pasado, y qué huellas de vida estamos buscando, fueron pasos necesarios para enviar una misión, muy cara, a este lugar cuidadosamente elegido para recolectar muestras”, explicó Hubbard.

Perseverance, que tiene el tamaño de un automóvil (3 metros de largo, 2,7 de ancho y 2,2 de altura), lleva siete instrumentos, para realizar los más avanzados experimentos científicos en Marte.

-SuperCam: Construida en colaboración con instituciones de Francia y España, el instrumento equipado por una cámara, un láser y espectrómetros que analizarán a distancia la composición química y mineralógica de compuestos, incluidos los orgánicos. Por ejemplo: podrá analizar muestras como la punta de un lápiz a siete metros.

-PIXL: Desarrollado por la NASA, es un espectrómetro fluorescente de rayos x que analizará con precisión la composición química del material presente en la superficie marciana.

-Mastcam-Z: Es un sistema de cámaras que captarán imágenes panorámicas, estereoscópicas y podrán hacer zoom, fue desarrollado por la Universidad Estatal de Arizona.

–RIMFAX: Es un generador de imágenes de radar que identificará que hay bajo la superficie marciana, entregando una resolución a escala centimétrica de su estructura geológica. El Instituto Noruego de Investigación de Defensa, estuvo a cargo de su desarrollo.

–MEDA: Creada 100% por un investigador español del Centro de Astrobiología (CSIC-INTA) MEDA, es un aparato de estación meteorológica que incluye sensores para medir la dirección del viento y velocidad, la temperatura, la presión, humedad relativa, radiación solar, así también el tamaño y la forma del polvo.

–MOXIE: Creada por el Instituto de Tecnología de Massachusetts (MIT), es un experimento que busca producir oxígeno a partir de CO2 marciano. Si esto tiene éxito, sería una forma en los futuros astronautas podrían generar combustible en Marte para regresar a la Tierra.

–SHERLOC: Este espectrómetro Ranman, creado por la NASA, contiene un láser ultravioleta que puede detectar compuestos orgánicos y otro tipo de sustancias. Además, incluye una cámara de alta resolución que podrá tomar imágenes microscópicas a color del suelo marciano.

Además de estos siete instrumentos, Perseverance lleva un taladro perforador, un retrorreflector láser de fabricación italiana, un depósito para almacenar las muestras y el pequeño helicóptero Ingenuity.

Aunque las leyes de la física dicen que es casi imposible levantar y dirigir un aparato volador en Marte, ingenieros estadounidenses han creado un helicóptero lo suficientemente ligero y rápido como para explorar el planeta rojo a vista de pájaro.

Volar en Marte es muy diferente a hacerlo en la Tierrra porque no hay mucho aire para empujar y generar la elevación suficiente de un aparato. En la superficie de Marte, la atmósfera es solo 1/100 de la densidad de la Tierra, aunque la menor gravedad, un tercio de lo que se siente aquí, ayuda a volar. Pero despegar de la superficie de Marte es el equivalente a volar a una altitud de 30 kilómetros en la Tierra. Ningún helicóptero terrestre ha volado tan alto, y eso es más del doble de la altitud a la que los aviones suelen volar.

Perseverance también posee características que ayudarán a los astronautas una vez que estén en la superficie de otros mundos: inteligencia de pilotaje mejorada para un viaje más eficiente y el conjunto de instrumentos del Analizador de Dinámica Ambiental de Marte (MEDA por sus siglas en inglés), que proporcionará información clave sobre condiciones meteorológicas, clima y polvo.

Por otra parte, la prueba de la tecnología del Experimento de Utilización in situ del Oxígeno de Marte (MOXIE por sus siglas en inglés) tiene como objetivo producir oxígeno a partir del dióxido de carbono captado de la atmósfera marciana, demostrando una manera en que futuros exploradores podrán producir oxígeno para la propulsión de cohetes y para respirar.

La misión supone el primer paso del ambicioso proyecto de la NASA que pretende poner al primer ser humano sobre la superficie marciana en las próximas décadas y que tiene como objetivo final poder crear un asentamiento permanente en este planeta.
